This February the 11th is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. However, in the words of the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, we still need "concerted and concrete" measures to overcome gender stereotypes and prejudices.

A study published in Science magazine in 2017 warned about the dramatic impact of gender stereotypes on the perception of intelligence. According to the study some preconceived ideas affect our girls since six years old even making them to perceive themselves as "less bright" than boys. Is it possible that this reaction to the complexity and beauty of science keeps our girls away of the laboratories? Yes, it is a concerning issue.

“If we allow our girls experimenting and understanding that they do not have to follow straight rules at school, even classroom, we will open a door to a future scientist than also could enjoy philosophy or history.”.

It is urgent that we understand that the empowerment of women in science does not begin in the lab, doctoral programs or public positions but also in childhood. If we allow our girls experimenting and understanding that they do not have to follow straight rules at school, even classroom, we will open a door to a future scientist than also could enjoy philosophy or history.

According to the UN highest spokesperson, the systematic discrimination that still persists in our society ends up in a women occupy of less than 30% in research and development positions around the world. In Spain, and after its creation in 1939, the Higher Council for Scientific Research chose for first time a female scientist as president: The Chemist Rosa María Menéndez.

On this day, let's open the door so millions of potential women scientists will not be afraid of stereotypes and enjoy music, art, computers and games.
